Access Programs
Before arriving at The Nest, a Phoenix service recipient spent three years living in a place that felt unsafe. “It was hell,” they shared. “Coming to Phoenix was like coming to heaven. It’s so clean here — outside and inside.”
Since arriving at Phoenix, this person has been able to access stable housing, consistent meals, and support from staff who genuinely care. “The staff are great, they like to see how they can help you out.”
They also shared that they appreciated seeing how the Phoenix team supports the unhoused population nearby, offering help where possible and hot coffee to anyone who asks.
Access to harm reduction supports has helped them stay safe, in addition to having a place to call home.
“I look forward to moving out one day into a place of my own,” they said. “But for now, it is nice to know I’ve got a safe, clean place to come home to.”

Phoenix Society offers practicum placements for students who are passionate about supporting individuals on their recovery journey and gaining experience in substance use and mental health services. We welcome practicum students from accredited post-secondary programs in social work, counselling and psychology, addictions and community support, nursing, child and youth care, music therapy, and recreation therapy. Students must be enrolled in a program that requires a practicum or field placement and be in good academic standing.
As a practicum student at Phoenix, you will gain hands-on experience in evidence-based addiction and recovery services, work alongside experienced, multidisciplinary teams, develop skills in client engagement, program delivery, and professional practice, learn within a structured and supportive environment with clinical oversight, and receive weekly or biweekly supervision within your discipline.
Placements provide meaningful learning opportunities while maintaining high standards of care for the individuals we serve. Students are not seen as additional staff. Not all applications will be accommodated; placement availability is limited and based on program capacity and supervision resources. We recommend applying at least 2–3 months before your practicum start date.
